Follow Miss Jones’ party planning checklist to throw the ultimate party

1. The Planning Process

Theme
A theme helps tie everything together - from the invitations to the decorations, music, to the dress code. You want your party to have a clear direction so everything feels cohesive. Once you have chosen a theme, decorations become easier. You will know what food fits, what colour to use, what activities to plan, and how to decorate. A theme also gives guests a heads-up on what kind of experience to expect. it is elegant and formal? Casual and easy-going? Quirky and distinctive? The theme sends a message about what to look forward too. We personally chose the theme a night under the sea - combining sophistication with the vibe of our venue.
Date & Time
The date is important because it makes sure that all your guests can attend. If you choose a date or time that conflicts with holidays, work schedules, or major events, you can risk having fewer people show up. It is best to pick a neutral date, that will work for the majority of your guests. The timing of your party will set the mood. Daytime parties can often be seen to be more causal, relaxed and family friendly. whereas evening parties tend to feel more formal, sophisticated and mature. We chose a Wednesday night - one of the more quiet nights in London - with a late evening start. This allows people time to finish work and get ready.
Dress code
Dress code can be the make or break of your party. You firstly need to make sure that your dress code matches your theme. You want you event to look cohesive, so the dress code needs to reflect that. The dress code should add fun and excitement. guests can enjoy picking our their outfit and will look forward to seeing what others wear. Lastly, a unique and well thought out dress code will make your party memorable. A good dress code makes for good photos and stories long after the event. We went for a black tie dress code, so that the event looked classy and uniform.

2. Choosing Your Venue

Choosing a good venue is crucial when planning a party because it sets the tone, atmosphere, and overall experience. The right space ensures that your guests are comfortable, matches the vibe you are going for, and offers the practical benefits like accessibility, capacity and amenities. A well-chosen venue can prevent issues like overcrowding or weather related problems and makes the event more enjoyable and memorable for everyone.

4. The Finishing Touches

Confirm The Details
It’s crucial to check in with your venue and suppliers—such as caterers, entertainers, and decorators—to confirm timings, logistics, and expectations. Be sure to re-confirm delivery times for any rentals or supplies, as well as arrival times. Additionally, double-check that all paperwork and contracts are in order to ensure everything runs smoothly on the day.
Finalise The Guestlist
It’s important to confirm all RSVPs so you know the exact number of guests attending. We also recommend double-checking any dietary restrictions or special requirements, especially if you're providing food and drinks. This will help ensure you're well-prepared, avoiding both overestimating and underestimating the amount of food, drink, and space needed for your event.
Create a Runsheet/Schedule
Planning the party’s schedule is essential, from guest arrivals to activities, speeches, performances, food service, and more. It’s important to share this timeline with your venue, vendors, and anyone assisting with the event to ensure everyone is aligned and knows what’s happening at all times. This is also the perfect opportunity to delegate specific tasks to your helpers, so they’re clear on their responsibilities and can keep everything running smoothly. Clear communication and coordination are key to a successful event!

The Tavern was originally a coffee house – the Queen Charlotte recorded in 1822, but it became a pub and probably acquired the name of The Fitzroy Tavern by 1856.

The area we call Fitzrovia is named after the Fitzroy Tavern, which was one of the main social hubs of the area from after the First World War.  It became the haunt of the literary and artistic crowd – artists associated with the Tavern in the past included Augustus John, Nina Hamnett, Walter Sickert and Jacob Epstein, but the Tavern also attracted many others including Dylan Thomas, George Orwell, Richard Attenborough, Michael Bentine, Albert Pierrepoint (the hangman), Aleister Crowley (of Black Magic fame), Michael Bentine, Kenneth Williams, Tommy Cooper.

Alongside this, every Wednesday Fitzroy Tavern hosts the Pear Shaped Comedy Club.
