Discover the story behind Torel 1884 Suites & Apartments and how it all began Based in the city center, a stone’s throw from Aliados and Ribeira, Torel 1884 Suites & Apartments consists of two buildings: on Rua Mouzinho da Silveira, a charming and surprising 19th-century mansion houses the ‘hotel’ itself – where there are rooms and suites, as well as the main reception, restaurant, and common areas; a few meters away, on Rua das Flores, a historic building with luxury apartments. he renovation of the mansion maintained, as far as possible, the original structure and materials, including stone, part of the wooden floor, and decorative elements, preserving the soul of the place as much as possible. To implement this idea, our Torel 1884 Suites & Apartments had several partners from Porto. he architectural vision was realized by Miguel Nogueira, with interior design by Nano Design. This project aimed to highlight the building’s architectural elegance while celebrating the cultural diversity of the Portuguese Discoveries across all spaces. Every room is meticulously decorated in line with its unique name – such as “Malagueta” with red touches, “Elephant” in grey, and “Porcelain” in blue. Each element was thoughtfully crafted, featuring custom joinery, traditional tassel-making, and hand-made decorative touches that give each room its own personality. The design also prioritized collaboration with Portuguese suppliers and artisans, ensuring an authentic, local influence throughout. The interiors were enhanced by artists Jorge Curval and João Pedro Rodrigues. Curval created large-scale paintings throughout the spaces, offering a unique interpretation of the themes. Rodrigues’ work is showcased at the entrance, drawing inspiration from the muses of Os Lusíadas. His installation contrasts the ethereal and the human, with six white heads symbolizing nature and purity on one wall, and thirteen dark heads on the opposite side, representing the material world and human frailties.
