Hawksmoor Guildhall is a stone’s throw from what may have been the world’s first steakhouse. Being in the crux of the City of London, it’s no surprise that on weekdays the dining floor is bustling with a business crowd. In recent years, though, Sundays have become something of an institution, with groups of friends or family gathering for the best Sunday roast in Bank.
A room dedicated to the actors, artists and songsmiths who founded the Sublime Society of Beefsteaks back in 18th Century London. Part members’ club, part secret society, this boho group met weekly to consume vast quantities of beefsteak and booze – just punch, port or porter, no fancy French wines allowed. Before long, everyone wanted in. Even the Prince Regent (soon-to-be King George IV).
