Having first opened in December 2020 for delivery and takeaway only; SUMI in Notting Hill, from Endo Kazutoshi, opened its doors for in restaurant dining on 18th May 2021.
The casual yet beautifully designed little sister to the Michelin-starred Endo at the Rotunda, SUMI offers elevated neighbourhood dining that delivers on authentic yet inventive Japanese food. Named after Endo’s mother, the kitchen at SUMI is led by Head Chef Yasuda Akinori (previously of Zuma), who has worked alongside Endo for many years.
Exceptional Japanese Dishes
The menu at SUMI takes inspiration and direction from Japanese traditions while also paying homage to the many people and places that have inspired Endo on his journey. Due to his personal relationships with the UK’s top seafood suppliers – from London to Scotland and everywhere in between – only the freshest and highest quality ingredients are used for this refined yet approachable menu.
For a multi-sensory experience synonymous with sushi master Endo Kazutoshi’s signature cuisine, take a seat and enjoy the a la carte menu from SUMI’s chef’s table. Ajoined to the open kitchen located at the heart of the restaurant. These highly desirable front row seats provide a birds-eye view of the sushi masters in action.
Diners can choose from nigiri, sashimi or temaki style sushi, with highlights including Hotate, a temaki made with diced scallop and Hana Hojiso flowers; and Yasai, a vegetarian choice with pickled carrot and mooli radish, smoked and fermented mooli, chives and sesame and soy dressing.
A selection of regularly changing specials will also be available, alongside a number of more substantial mains. Must-tries include the Japanese A4 Wagyu striploin served with charred puntarella and a yuzu onion sauce; and white fish steak served with SUMI’s seaweed and ponzu sauce.
To finish, there’s a Matcha Mille Crepe – this eye-catching traditional Japanese delicacy is made of thin matcha green tea crepes, layered with fresh cream and dusted with matcha powder.
Exciting Cocktails, Wines, Whiskies & Sake
Cocktail lovers are well catered for at SUMI with a number of tempting choices. Alongside all the classics, unique serves on offer include Kawaii Ne mixed with sake, Portobello Gin, peach and lychee liqueur and yuzu juice; and Momo Iro Pie, made with Cariel Vanilla Vodka, rhubarb jam, lemon juice and egg whites.
An extensive selection of Japanese whiskies and sakes is also available, alongside wines, Champagne and beer.
Elegant Interiors
Elegant, understated and stylish, the interior includes pale wood panelling, traditional white tiling and rattan accents, with soft hues of cream, white and beige throughout. Gold lights, plants and Japanese script art provide warmth and create an intimate and inviting setting. Outside, a handful of al fresco tables allow guests to make the most of the sunshine, and watch the world go by whilst enjoying delicious Japanese dishes.
