Noble Rot Soho is in the former site of the historic Gay Hussar, and is the second restaurant from Dan Keeling and Mark Andrew, the duo behind Noble Rot magazine and Keeling Andrew & Co wine importers. Notorious as the lair of many a politician (it was here that the downfall of Thatcher was plotted), the building’s beautiful period features, the years of good living soaked into its walls, have been preserved and renovated. Now, in the first floor dining room, cartoonist Martin Rowson, acerbic chronicler of the Soho and political scenes, has painted two triptychs for those same walls, celebrating the restaurant’s characters – past and present – in all their louche glory.
Noble Rot Soho’s menu is overseen by Head Chef Alex Jackson (ex-owner/head chef of East London’s Sardine) and executive chef Stephen Harris of The Sportsman. It includes subtle references to The Gay Hussar’s storied past with dishes such as eggs Casino, cabbage stuffed with game and sour cream, and a daily goulash, alongside Robert Carrier’s pâte aux herbes and a whole roast chicken with morels and Vin Jaune to share for two.
