Where:
Located on the rooftop of the seventh floor with a new dedicated entrance off Willow Street at The Hoxton Shoreditch, 81 Great Eastern St, London EC2A 3HU
What:
After starting out as a pop-up at Soho House West Hollywood in January 2019 by executive chef Giacomo Pettinari, Maya became an instant hit. It then went on to hold residencies at Houses all over the world, including Ludlow House, Shoreditch House, and Soho House Berlin. Maya now permanently sits on the first floor of the West Hollywood penthouse. Prior to joining Soho House, Pettinari spent more than a decade working in LA’s top restaurants, learning from Mexican line cooks, and eating out at Mexican restaurants and food trucks twice a week. In designing the original menu for Maya, Pettinari tapped into his love of regional Mexican cooking and took inspiration from recipes that his predominantly Oaxacan kitchen staff knew from home.
The rooftop, designed by the Soho House design team, is inspired by bohemian decor and its east London location. Greenery and natural touches are used throughout, contrasting with its industrial setting and blackened steel fittings. There is a large outdoor area, with rooftop views and a banquette running across the back of the space to create a comfortable, alfresco dining area.
The indoor space is encased by a new glass structure, with a concrete and terrazzo bar, and a mix of low-level lounge seating, booths, and dining tables. This creates a relaxed atmosphere for guests to eat and drink.
The Food:
Like the original location, the menu focuses on coastal Baja-Mexican food using locally sourced produce, and includes new dishes such as Spicy Tuna Tostada with crispy leeks and chipotle aioli, plant-based Mushroom Quesadilla with chipotle mayo, and Calabacitas Taco with squash blossom, cream and pico de gallo, among others. Favourite dishes from the West Hollywood site will also be on the menu – these include Barbacoa, Young Coconut Aguachile and the crowd favourite, a roaming guacamole cart preparing made-to-order guacamole tableside.
The Drinks:
The cocktail menu has also been given a Mexican twist with a Mayan Negroni, a Verde Aztec and a T&T, tequila paired with a Trip CBD mixer.
Our Thoughts:
We find it so hard to find good mexican restaurants in London and this one really excelled itself. The vibe, ambiance and staff are amazing and the food was so delicious.
Our favourite dishes were the Octopus Carpaccio, Tuna Toastadas, Grilled Corn Side and the Chicken Tacos.
We loved the little Guacamole Cart where they make it in front of you!
Our favourite cocktail was the Verde Aztec…
Dessert- make sure to order the Churros!
They have a gorgeous terrace outside too which is perfect for the summer!
