Gymkhana is not short of its fair share of esteemed awards (including a Michelin star awarded in 2014, winner of National Restaurant Awards Best Restaurant in the UK 2014 and Best Indian Restaurant in the UK 2015), all of which add to the restaurants established reputation as one of London’s finest Indian eateries. Inspiration for the restaurant has been taken from Colonial times during the Raj, when a Gymkhana club was a ‘Gentleman’s Club’. And this ‘club’ style is rolled out in marble counter tops and lacquered oak ceilings.
It is easy to be blown-away by the beautifully designed surrounds, but it is the impeccable food served in this central London hideaway that really makes this restaurant the Jewel that it is!
To start we enjoyed the Aloo Tikki Chaat, Chana Masala, a fried potato dish that combines sweet, tangy and spicy flavours. Also make sure to try the Kid Goat Methi Keema, which is intensely rich and flavourful and the Duck Egg Bhurji, a creamy scrambled egg dish enhanced with lobster.
The Lasooni Wild Tiger Prawns were so fresh and juicy, served with a sweet red pepper chutney. While the meaty lamb chops option was boldly spiced with turmeric and ginger. However a visit to Gymkhana is not complete without ordering the Wild Muntjac Biryani. This large bowl, roofed with a flaky pasty and nigella seed doom, is placed in the centre of the table. But it is once you smash through the pasty that you discover the fluffy rice and tender venison, all brought together by the Pomegranate & Mint Raita.
As expected from the people that brought us Marylebones’s Trishna, the restaurant maintains attentive service with all dishes arriving by trolley. The attention to detail is next to none, and it is no wonder that this Gymkhana has the high-class reputation that it does.
