Restaurants to Celebrate Chinese New Year 2020

With Chinese New Year in London being the biggest celebration outside of Asia, it’s safe to say there are a number of places that it can be celebrated. Listed below are some of our suggestions to welcome in the Year of the Rat.


Kym’s in Bloomberg Arcade is set to welcome in the Year of the Rat for Chinese New Year 2020 with a stunning lantern installation, limited edition celebration menu and a giveaway of 3,000 prize-filled fortune cookies.

From 13th January to 9th February, the interiors will be dramatically decorated with an installation of traditional red lanterns, with hundreds adorning the ceiling of the main restaurant, mezzanine level and the bar with its bespoke cherry blossom tree.

In addition, Michelin starred chef, Andrew Wong has created an exclusive five course feast to ring in the new year, available for £45.*  The menu will begin with starters of Prosperity Salad – a Cantonese-style raw salad with salmon topped with plum sauce dressing – symbolising abundance, prosperity and vigour; followed by Roasted Duck Jiaozi, or the vegetarian option of Wild Mushroom Jiaozi – traditional Chinese dumplings; then Black Truffled Pumpkin, Salted Duck Egg Emulsion and Fermented Olives.

For the main course there is a choice of two sharing dishes from the following: Kym’s signature Three Treasures (Crispy Pork Belly, Iberico Char Siu, Slow Poached Soy Chicken); or Seabass with Double Deluxe Soy and Ginger Spring Onion. Two vegetarian options are also available of Buddha’s Delight (a winter vegetable hot pot with sweet potato, shiitake, kohlrabi and chestnuts) served with Youtiao (a long, savoury doughnut); or Typhoon Shelter Mushroom. All mains are served with Longevity Noodles, Steamed Jasmine Rice and Stir-Fried Greens. To finish, guests can indulge in desserts of Yuzu Layered Cake served with Orange Sorbet and Ginger, or a vegan Fuji Apple with Sorbet and Snow.

The restaurant team will also be on hand to distribute over 3,000 Kym’s fortune cookies to all guests throughout Chinese New Year, filled with exclusive prizes and offers including complimentary bottles of wine, free desserts and 25% off the recently launched Saturday Lobster Brunch.

*The Chinese New Year Menu will be available for tables of 2-8, and must be ordered by the whole table. The menu will run from 13th January until 9th February.

Hakkasan’s menu celebrates good fortune and modern Chinese cuisine in the Year of the Rat. Menu includes items such as the Yu Sheng salad with house-cured salmon and plum dressing, Golden treasure pockets with abalone and wild mushrooms, and Baked salt-crusted chicken with shiitake, bamboo shoot, and chestnut. Conceived by Christian Liaigre, Hakkasan hits the spot every time with its Michelin-starred menu.

The menu is rounded off with a striking salted caramel, mandarin chilli and cocoa Lucky Jie dessert and guests are invited to write their wishes for the year ahead on red ribbons, which will be hung up in the restaurant as decoration over the festive period.

A Wong

Andrew Wong took over A.Wong from his parents in 2012 and since then has created fine dining dishes that showcase the very best of chinese cooking. The name itself is in honour of his parents, Albert and Annie.

The tasting menu takes you on a journey through the provinces of China, and sees you feast on dim sum, cured scallops, barbecued pork jerky and Yunnan seared beef with mint, chilli, lemongrass and pulled noodle crackers before enjoying poached meringues. It comes at a price but this is special occasion dining and the food makes really does make it feel worth the splurge.

China Tang

On both Friday the 24th and Saturday 25th of January, China Tang will be offering an eight-course banquet menu, featuring China Tang’s hallmark Cantonese classics, as well as opulent specials, playing tribute to the fortune and success of the Rat. Guests will also be able to indulge in the full Dim Sum and A La Carte menu options across the period.

Guests on these evenings can expect an exclusive performance of the Lion Dance, an iconic Chinese New Year ritual, bringing good luck and prosperity, creating an unforgettable and auspicious evening!

In celebration of Chinese New Year, Yauatcha is reinventing the Chinese lantern with help from leading London artists.

From Monday 5th February until Sunday 4th March, Yauatcha is hosting unique art installations from two of the brightest lights in the design world: Lydia Kasumi Shireff and Jamie Julien Brown.

Jamie Julien Brown‘s art installation at Yauatcha Soho evolves the totem sculptures, creating hanging lanterns inspired by the diverse colour palette of Yauatcha’s dim sum and patisserie.

During Chinese New Year, a celebratory menu and exclusive patisserie and macarons will be available, featuring dishes inspired by the annual festivities. View the menu here.

Lucky & Joy

The talented team at Lucky & Joy are celebrating the first Chinese New Year in their new home with a thoughtfully curated set menu, available from Tuesday 21st to Saturday 25th January.
The broadly Chinese-inspired restaurant, which opened last month in Clapton (just a few doors down from London wine bar icon, P. Franco), comes from chef Ellen Parr and drinks expert Pete Kelly, following a string of sell-out pop-ups and residencies across the city.
For just £33 per head, guests will be welcomed with the restaurant’s fan-favourite Szechuan Negroni, followed by a feasting menu of seven dishes including a cinnamon custard tart for pudding. The menu is a nod to Chinese food symbolism and ‘lucky’ ingredients, which are traditionally served during the festival season and are believed to express well-wishes for the new year.

Red Farm

Do you need a break from the rat race of the city this Chinese New Year? Quirky and contemporary Chinese restaurant RedFarm (located in the heart of Covent Garden) is cooking up a special menu to welcome in the Year of the Rat this January 25th, rumoured to be a year of wealth and surplus…hopefully.
