RESTAURANTS COME TOGETHER TO TACKLE HOMELESSNESS

November sees StreetSmart kick off their 2020 fundraising campaign working with
restaurants across the UK to raise money for those who are facing homelessness as a result
of Covid-19.

Through the simple idea of adding a voluntary £1 to diners’ bills during the festive months,
StreetSmart raises funds for charitable projects that help those living on the streets and in
unsuitable accommodation. Last year’s campaign raised a whopping £760,000, bringing the
total reached by StreetSmart to over £10.3 million since its foundation in 1998.

‘We thought StreetSmart was an excellent idea when it started and we still do, years later.
We’re delighted to have this direct conduit to helping our community…And have a good
lunch!’ Fergus Henderson and Trevor Gulliver, St John

The campaign launches at a time when the hospitality industry is dealing with
unprecedented difficulties due to Covid-19 restrictions. Despite the challenges faced, over
450 restaurants have agreed to take part including campaign stalwarts Barrafina ,
Ottolenghi and St John as well as newcomers Orasay and Larry’s with Restaurant Story,
Crockers Tring and Parkers Tavern in Cambridge taking part for the first time.

“The support for StreetSmart this year is humbling. So many restaurateurs are keen to do
their bit even though times are so uncertain and obstacles keep being thrown at them. Their
commitment means we can raise vital funds at a time when they’ll be needed most” Glenn Pougnet, CEO Streetsmart

Crucially, the property industry charity LandAid have formed a three year partnership with
Streetsmart to tackle youth homelessness through the pandemic and beyond. Their
partnership makes the campaign as efficient as possible as they cover all of Streetsmart’s
running costs thereby ensuring 100% donated by diners goes towards alleviating
homelessness.

Michelin Star chef Clare Smyth is one of those taking part this year. She says “StreetSmart is
a fantastic charity helping so many vulnerable people, who need our support now more than
ever. It is good to know that we can help those in need by simply donating £1 each time we
dine out.”
