International Women’s Day is an opportunity for me to express gratitude for the gift of being able to work for a company that empowers me to both fundamentally contribute to the growth of a small business and simultaneously balance the responsibilities of my young family. I know that this hasn’t always been and, unfortunately, still isn’t an option for so many women, and this can often be a major obstacle to meaningful employment after having children. This was fundamentally more powerful for me as I had an eight year career break while looking after my two young sons, and we moved frequently with my husband’s job in the armed forces. GiftRound’s founder and CEO, Craig Forsythe, recognised the contribution I could make to his company, and as an older female returning to the workplace, my experience at GiftRound has helped my courage, determination, and ambition grow in ways I didn’t imagine they could when I was thinking about re-entering the world of work.

We are a small team of five at GiftRound, with four women and Craig! Although we don’t have formal plans for IWD, I will take the opportunity to tell my three female team members how I think they do a brilliant job at GiftRound, and as mums – sometimes we don’t hear it enough! I’ll also be letting Craig know the impact GiftRound has had on me personally as an inclusive employer. Inclusivity is such as a fantastic theme for this year’s IWD and every Friday I attend a School of Marketing mentoring session which has been such an inclusive space for me as an older female who has become an ‘accidental marketer’ since joining the GiftRound team so I’ll be sure to let them know the impact that’s has on me. Lastly, I’ll talk about IWD at the dinner table with my two young sons. I’ll be sure to have an answer prepped for my 7 year old who will undoubtedly ask ‘Is there an International Men’s Day too?’ One of the most encouraging things I’ve watched with my children is the openness with how they approach gender, my 10 year old support the Lionesses as passionately as he does the England men’s football team and I hope the gender gap continues to close in their lifetimes.

Although I haven’t worked specifically in the fintech or marketing industry over the past 10 years, I do know that remote or hybrid working has been a fundamental shift in terms of unlocking opportunities for women in so many industries. When I returned to the workplace after my eight year gap, I worked for six months as a librarian. I absolutely loved the job and interacting with customers, but the cost of wraparound childcare to enable me to be in that role was huge. School holidays were also a major challenge, as several staff members had young children. Since joining GiftRound, I work around the school run, and during holidays, I flex my hours so I start and finish earlier and can spend time with my boys in the afternoon. This is a gift I can’t really put a price on!
